Interest in women’s football is on the rise and it is currently said to be the fastest-growing sport globally. Record crowds are expected for this year’s Women’s EURO 2022 football tournament held in England.  Since women’s football is of great interest and is growing, the demand for live and after-the-game content from the tournament is on the way up as well.

What is more, the Finnish team is a part of the tournament for the first time since 2013. And all the games from the tournament can be seen through the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) channels.

In order to meet the demand, Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) is using our AI-generated live video clipping covering all the games from the tournament. 

AI algorithm analyses every game by recognizing goals and creates automated video clips for immediate sharing and viewing. Clips and game highlights become available quickly through the Yle Areena platform, promoting higher fan engagement for the biggest event of the year in women’s football. In addition, the clips can be used in news coverage during the tournament and for viewing the most exciting parts of the game after the broadcast. When you watch a live football game, the feed is usually coming from dozens of cameras all over the place, and being produced by a TV crew of hundreds of people. There’s a lot of real-time decision-making about which camera’s feed the viewer should be looking at at any given time.

AI is changing how you watch sports and it turns out, we can use machine learning to detect the most important events in the game from ALL camera feeds, and make very good video-cutting suggestions to the production team within just a few seconds. Not only does it save effort, it also improves the viewer’s experience.

How to get interesting insights from football games?

Looking to analyze individual players? Our data analysis tells you how the individual players are performing in the game. 

Imagine that you want to get detailed player data from each game, and you want to share it with your network. Your first thoughts might be to start by going through huge search volumes. Data analysis gives you the details how the players are performing in the games.

Starting from EURO2020 tournament AISpotter has successfully collaborated with the leading Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat (HS). We are producing comprehensive data analysis from all the team Finland “Huuhkajat” football games.  Collaboration is a joint initiative together with MyCoazh

How the process is running?
The process is flowing the following way: Game event data is collected live during the games. Raw data contains all the actions the Finnish players are having with the ball. Also the key actions (e.g. long runs) without the ball are included in. All the information is stored to a database and automated, predefined queries are used to process the data and to put together all the needed parameters and datasets.

The newspaper is using an API to pull the classified data out from our database and then they are processing with data visualization and the content is ready for publishing shortly after the game.

What is content is visualized?
It is easy to see from the visualization who were the individual Finnish players who succeeded in each game. Also, there are shots on goal, shot end sequences and passing maps included in.

YLE Sports (Finnish Broadcasting Company) is utilizing automated live video clipping for goals during the EURO 2020 tournament. Our automated and fast service finds the goals and creates accurate video clips available immediately. The service fulfils the growing needs for fast content creation and sharing and makes it possible for fans to experience and relive the success of their favourite teams instantly.

On top of the live video clipping our AI algorithm finds the key events from each game and puts together automated video highlights. Those highlight reels are ready for sharing in less than 10 minutes after the game is over. And automatically created video content can be viewed through YLE Areena in the EURO 2020 goal clip series.

How video analysis is done?
Once again the process is automated end to end. Our cloud based service is receiving live video stream directly from YLE and connect
ing it with our analyzing algorithm. The AI algorithm detects goals directly from live stream. When a goal is detected a video clip is created and pushed within seconds back to YLE. Inside YLE the clip is then automatically routed to YLE Areena and published.

Our intelligent video analysis service is supporting YLE’s development strategy, as they are constantly seeking ways to utilize the latest technologies in the future media services. Before launching the service for EURO 2020 we ran a project for YLE where live analysis from Coppa Italia final was performed.
